“Merely Mortal”  (9:00am – 11:00am) by Dr. Jose Pereira

Description: Would it be important for you to know about something that affects you, your family, your friends, your neighbours and your colleagues? Death touches us all, but many people do not know what palliative care is or are afraid of talking about it. Did you know that it is more about living than about dying? Did you know that we can all make a difference? This is your opportunity to ask and discuss questions you may have about palliative and end of life care.

Dr. Jose Pereira is a Palliative Care Physician; Professor, Division of Palliative Medicine, McMaster University and Department of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa; and Scientific Officer, Pallium Canada

Euthanasia or Benemortasia? Living and Dying Well (11:00am – 12:00pm) by Michel G. MacDonald, PhD, STD

Description: What are the theological foundations for palliative care? How can we truly respect the dignity of the dying person? What is the difference between euthanasia and benemortasia? How far does freedom of conscience go? These and other questions will be examined to help us sort through the confusion and misconceptions involved in palliative care and end of life issues.

Michel G. MacDonald, PhD, STD is Executive Director of the Catholic Organization for Life and Family
